Mankind used to bomb themselves back to the stoneage. The game takes part after the final war. You have to survive and gain supremacy among whats left from civilazation in this odd deserted world. You are not alone. It's possible to hire medicals, mercenaries, hunters or technicians each of which have special abilities to ease your progress in game. On your conquers it's recommended to keep your eyes open for usefull items. You never know what surprise you could find around the next corner. Your long term goal is to conquer every single settlement in game to reestablish security and supply for Ground Zero.
